XIRCOM POCKET ETHERNET ADAPTER II
Additional Information
Version 2.00
June 15, 1992
========================================================================
Welcome to a new level of connectivity convenience. The Xircom Pocket
Ethernet Adapter II is the easiest-to-use Ethernet adapter available.
Be sure to fill out and return your Product Registration Card and record
your model and serial number on page ii of the Xircom User's Guide.
Please refer to your network operating system manual and your Xircom
User's Guide for instructions on installation of the drivers contained
on this diskette.
DRIVER NOTES
------------
Drivers for 3Com 3+ Share and for Artisoft LANtastic ver. 4.0 are
available on the Xircom Bulletin Board System (BBS). See below for
BBS information.
SLEEP MODE NOTES
----------------
Some notebook computers offer a power-saving feature sometimes referred
to as "sleep mode." Typically, when the system goes to sleep, the
central processing unit (CPU) will power down. The Xircom adapter senses
that the system is not active and will automatically power down and
disconnect from the local area network (LAN). There is a utility on the
Xircom BBS that will allow you to log back into the LAN without having to
reboot the computer and reload the drivers after the computer has gone
into sleep mode. See below for BBS information.
PPX NOTES
---------
Software support for the Xircom Parallel Port Multiplexor (PPX) is
programmed into the DOS drivers provided on the current version of the
Xircom Network Drivers Diskette. The network device driver will detect
whether or not PPX hardware is present. DO NOT load a separate PPX
driver (i.e., PPX.COM or PPX.SYS).
When you use the Xircom adapter with a Xircom Parallel Port Multiplexor
(PPX) and a printer, be sure that your printer is turned on before
you load your network drivers.
The PE2NDIS.OS2 driver does not support the Xircom Parallel Port
Multiplexor (PPX) at this time.
OS/2 NOTES
----------
IBM OS/2 LAN Requester is not supported with this release but will be
in a future release.
EPP NOTES
-----------
The drivers on this disk support personal computers (PCs) that have
Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) capability. This new high-speed technology
has been incorporated into Intel's new 25Mhz SL chip set in the 82360SL
I/O controller. To enable EPP mode on an EPP-capable computer, see your
Xircom User's Guide. As of this release, the following EPP-capable PCs
have been or are currently being tested:
COMPAQ LTE Lite/20 & Lite/25 **
Dell 325 NC
Epson NB-SL/25
Everex Carrier SL/25
Grid 1660
Leading Edge N3/SL25C or N3/SL25M
NEC Ultralite SL/25c
NCR 3170
Sharp PC-6781
Tandy 3830 SL
Zenith MastersPort SLe
Zenith ZNOTE
** To enable the EPP utility on the COMPAQ LTE Lite, first use
Compaq's SETUP program to change the default LPT port to LPT2.
As of this release, the EPP.OS2 utility has been tested with the Zenith
MastersPort SLe and the COMPAQ LTE Lite/25 computers.
Xircom engineering has found that under exceptionally heavy network
traffic during a period ranging from 4 to 12 hours, some EPP-capable
computers may lock up. In some instances, other workstations may not be
able to log in to the network after this error has occurred. If this
happens on your system, you may restore network operation as follows:
disable EPP mode by removing the EPP utility from your CONFIG.SYS or
AUTOEXEC.BAT (or other *.BAT file) on the EPP workstation, then reboot
both the EPP workstation and the network server. Contact Xircom
Technical Support for additional assistance.
DEC NOTES
-----------------
When using DEC PATHWORKS and the DOS NDIS driver (PE2NDIS.EXE), the
LAT services must be defined manually. LAT services cannot be deleted
in LATCP.
When using DEC PCSA and the PE2DLL.EXE driver, neither DEC's NCP
loop-circuit/node nor the NCP show-line-char/counters command is
supported at this time. LAT services cannot be deleted in LATCP.
MACHINE-SPECIFIC ISSUES
-----------------------
When using the Mitsuba Ninja or the Packard Bell 286 LPV under Novell
NetWare, interrupt 7A must be disabled by creating a SHELL.CFG file
which contains the line: INT7A=OFF
When using the COMPAQ LTE Lite/20 or Lite/25 in EPP mode, run Compaq's
setup program and change the printer port from LPT1 to LPT2 before
loading the Xircom EPP utility to enable EPP mode. When the network
driver is loaded, a message will indicate that LPT1 is being used.
After a warm boot, some machines may show the error message, "Adapter
missing, not powered or malfunctioned," even though the adapter and
power supply are properly connected. To clear the message, remove and
reapply power to the adapter, then do a warm boot of the machine.
